At nightfall, pedal gently across La Parguera’s famous bioluminescent bay on stable Chiliboat waterbikes and watch the water light up beneath your feet. This guided nighttime experience reveals one of Puerto Rico’s rare glowing ecosystems in a calm, eco-friendly way that feels both peaceful and unforgettable.
This 90-minute guided tour takes place in the protected waters of La Parguera, near the town of Lajas on Puerto Rico’s southwest coast. After meeting your guide and receiving a short safety briefing, you’ll settle into a comfortable, catamaran-style waterbike designed for balance and ease. No prior experience is needed. The pedaling is gentle, allowing you to relax and focus on the surroundings as the group glides away from shore.
As darkness settles in, the real magic begins. With every movement of the water, microscopic organisms create flashes of natural blue-green light, glowing beneath the surface like liquid stars. Each pedal stroke, ripple, or gentle splash brings the bay to life. Guides explain how this phenomenon works and point out the best ways to see the glow while protecting the environment.
The atmosphere is quiet and immersive. Above you, the night sky stretches wide. Around you, the bay shimmers with light. You’ll have time to slow down, take in the scene, and fully appreciate this rare natural wonder without crowds or noisy motors.
The return ride is unhurried, giving you a final chance to enjoy the glowing water before reaching shore. It’s an experience that blends nature, science, and serenity, leaving you with a vivid memory of Puerto Rico after dark.
